¹FREE lifetime traffic updates may not be transferred to another person or another Garmin product. Lifetime traffic extends for the useful life of your Garmin traffic receiver (as long as you own a compatible Garmin GPS) or as long as Garmin receives traffic data from its traffic supplier, whichever is shorter. A traffic receiver’s “useful life” means the period during which the receiver (a) has the required technical capabilities to utilize current traffic data service and (b) is capable of operating as intended without major repairs. Traffic content not available for all areas. See traffic coverage areas.
²If you purchase a nüMaps Lifetime subscription (sold separately or bundled together with certain GPS models), you will receive up to 4 map data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on Garmin’s website, for 1 compatible Garmin product until your product’s useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter. A product’s “useful life” means the period during which the product (a) has sufficient memory capacity and other required technical capabilities to utilize current map data and (b) is capable of operating as intended without major repairs. A product will be deemed to be out of service and its useful life to be ended if no updates have been downloaded for such product for a period of 24 months or more. Unless otherwise stated, the updates you receive under the subscription will be updates to the same geographic map data originally included with your Garmin product when originally purchased. In some instances, your Garmin product might not have sufficient memory remaining for you to load an update to the map data, in which case you will need to either (a) select reduced map data coverage for your updates, or (b) purchase separately a microSD™/SD™ card (if and as applicable to your Garmin product) and load all or a portion of the map data coverage for your updates to the card and insert the card into the microSD/SD card slot contained in your Garmin product. If neither of the measures in (a) or (b) can be used to address your product’s lack of sufficient remaining memory, then Garmin may conclude that the “useful life” of your product has expired. Garmin may terminate your nüMaps Lifetime subscription at any time if you violate any of the terms of this agreement or your subscription. Your nüMaps Lifetime subscription may not be transferred to another Garmin product.

4My 3rd Garmin - New Features and how they worked
By Timothy Theis
This is my 3rd Garmin GPS. I have become accustomed to their user interface and performance, so I can't compare to other makes. I wanted to talk about the new features that attracted me to this unit and how I evaluated their usefulness on my first 3 hour road trip to a location I know by heart.

Feature 1 - 5 inch screen. I am older and am having to use reading glasses to see the GPS mounted to the dash. My earlier unit was a 4 inch. I considered a 7 inch Magellan, but when I found out you couldn't install custom POIs on the Magellan, it ruled that one out for me. We go camping frequently and I have all the state parks as custom POIs. I also have truck stops I like to use. The 5 inch display was definately an improvement for me.

Feature 2 - Automated voice recognition. I definately don't like being distracted by touching the screen to see how far the next roadside rest is (see custom POIs above). So I thought telling the GPS what I wanted made a lot of sense. When it comes to "commands" this feature works OK, but I have discovered I have to turn the radio volume down or talk VERY LOUDLY. The latter disturbs my wife :-) However, when you want to provide an address to locate, the unit performed badly. I couldn't get it to correctly locate any of 3 addresses correctly... i.e. "4810 Whitewood Court" ended up with something very strange.

Feature 3 - Turn lanes. Knowing which lane you need to be in to correctly exit the highway and be ready for the next turn. There are two distinctly different features on this unit for knowing the turn lanes. One is "Viewing Junctions" which displays a picture of the upcoming junction, complete with signage. This takes up about the right half of the screen. The other turn lane feature is a small area in the upper left corner that shows , by using arrows, the number of lanes. The lane(s) you are to be in are bright white, while the others are grey. I found the arrows to be VERY useful and quick to absorb at a glance. I found the "Viewing Junctions" not very useful, as you had to look over a much larger area of the screen to absorb the information in a glance. I found I had to glance at the "Viewing Junctions" image several times before I understood which lane it wanted me to be in. For me at least, the "Viewing Junction" feature was of no use to me.

Feature 4 - Traffic. On my trip there were no traffic problems, so I didn't get to experience any rerouting due to traffic conditions. This feature appears to only work when you are in or around larger cities. Between cities, pressing the traffic button indicated that there was no or weak signal.

Feature 5 - Posted speed limits - As you are navigating a small sign appears on the display showing the posted limit and your actual speed. If your actual speed exceeds the posted limit, it turns red. Nice little feature to keep honest people honest.

Other Notes:
I found the estimated time of arrival to be more accurate than my previous GPSs. Perhaps because it knows the posted limits as they change along the route??? The menu system is different from my prior GPSs.

There is an icon composed of 3 horizontal white bars that, when pressed, bring up other options. Sometimes this icon is in the lower right of the display, sometimes it is located elsewhere depending on where you are in the menus. Since this was a little different than prior units, I am having to get adjusted to this.

5The Garmin nuvi 2595LMT is sweet!!
By Electronicbuff
I used the 2595LMT for a trip across the USA. Previously to this unit I used an older Garmin nuvi 360. There is really no comparison between the units, this one is so much better than the old one.

Screen:
I larger screen size is really nice at 5". I was impressed to see the exit signs pop-up on the screen showing me which lanes I should be in. The top left corner also shows a bright white lane indicator as to where you should be with dim indicators as to where you should not be. Also nice was the fact that at the top of the screen Garmin tells you what you will be doing next.

Screen Features (called layers):
I went into the layer options to turn on some added detail for my trip. I activated the screen layer to show me: time for arrival, miles remaining, altitude (really cool to see why the truck was slowing down as I went up a mountain), my speed, and the road's speed limit.

Speed Features:
- Don't turn on the speed limit audible notification, it will drive you crazy with the 3-beeps every time you go 1 mile an hour over the posted speed. It drove me crazy till I pulled over and shut down the noise notification for going over the speed limit.
- It will still show your speed and the speed limit without the audible alert on.
- I liked this feature and found that the Garmin was more accurate than my speedometer when I passed by an outdoor "this is your speed" sign.
- Sometimes when Garmin shows a speed limit it is not accurate. I wouldn't use their limit posting as fact. It may have been more accurate had I updated the maps before I began.
(Update 7/25/2012)- I spoke to Greg at Garmin about changing the tolerance from 1 MPH to 5 or 10 MPH over the speed limit. Per Garmin this currently is not an option as it is programmed in their firmware. He thought this would be a good idea too and suggested I request this in a firmware update. I did. If you own one, please request this feature too so Garmin sees that a speed tolerance of 5 or 10 MPH over the limit is a feature we would like to have in an upcoming software update.

Directions:
- Garmin speaks the names of the streets and this newer version no longer says "Recalculating" if you miss your turn. Instead it just changes your route to fix your mistake.
- The upcoming directions is displayed at the top of the screen so you know what you will be doing next before Garmin speaks it.

Bluetooth Phone Tie-in:
- I linked the Garmin to my phone so I could make and receive calls through it. When someone called my cell phone an icon popped up on the screen with a ringing tone asking me to "Answer" or "Ignore" the call. It was so much easier to answer my phone this way, by touching one button on my Garmin, than digging for my phone and sliding it to unlock.
- The negative however is the fact that the person's voice coming out of the Garmin speaker was not as loud as it could have been. This may be because the speaker is on the back of Garmin. If the caller talked loud and clear things were much better. Depending on the clarity of the callers voice I sometimes get some distortion from the speaker. Best thing to do is tell the caller they are on a speaker phone and to speak clearly and not too fast. Kinda like using a cheap speaker phone. They said they could hear me clearly but I had to turn off the radio and CB to understand them.
- You can also dial calls through the Garmin with larger buttons than are on my phone. As you start to punch in the phone number it pops up other numbers with the same order of digits that you dialed previously to help you just click it to finish.
- There was an option on Garmin for voice dial but I didn't think to set that up before I got on the road.
- Another thing I learned was to be sure you click disconnect on the Garmin at the end of the call by touching the phone icon at the end of the call and selecting the big "disconnect" icon. I forgot to do this a couple of times and Garmin wouldn't tie-in for my next incoming call.
- Overall I liked the phone tie-in

Voice Activated Programming:
- I wasn't sure it I'd use this but now I don't use it any other way.
- I changed the default voice activation command to my wife's name at first but thought that would be problematic if she were with me, so I switched it over to the respond when I say the word "Garmin". Now if I just say the word "Garmin" it will ask me what I would like to do while showing me a screen of options. I can change where I want to go without even touching Garmin. I just say the word "Home" or "New Address" and Garmin asks my questions as to the address etc. After Garmin does it search it shows me a list of addresses that it though I might have said. I then can say "1" if that is the number next to the correct location or "2" if the correct address is by that number. If none are correct I can tell him to do it again. You need to speak clearly when you are giving an address or Garmin will come up with some wild addresses. Also make sure the radio or other talking is not happening as this will confuse Garmin.
- This feature is surely making me lazier than I already was.

Map:
- This version, with the LMT designation, has lifetime Map updates as well as lifetime Traffic.
- The map is decent and while you are getting near major traffic exits it often will prompt you with a picture of the exit sign showing you where you should be.
- Sometimes Garmin was a bit off as to what lane you should be in, typical with most GPS units, but for the other 95% of the time it was right on. Maybe a map update would have corrected this but I used it with the maps that were already preloaded in it since I had no Internet access where I set it up in Florida.
- The map also shows some restaurant or food icons while you are on the road. There are more gas stations available at the exits but I think Garmin only displayed the icon for the ones that paid them to be included on the general map. If you go into the gas or food settings on the 2nd screen you can find all the other gas/restaurants.

Live Traffic:
- This was another really nice addition to this Garmin.
- To use the Traffic Feature Garmin must be connected for power using the supplied power cable. Makes sense since you usually use the power cable on a trip.
- I put the power cable so it looped behind the Garmin which allowed the little plastic box on the power cable to see clearly through the windshield, this is the receiver for the Live Traffic feature
- You can check the signal strength of this feature by clicking on the car icon on the right of the screen.
- When you are in areas where the traffic feature is used the car icon will turn a color like green or red instead of being light gray meaning no transmissions in the area to read.
- I found the traffic feature to work in most larger areas or where the department of transportation has installed the radio transmitters. If you are is small town areas there is a really good chance that this feature won't be on since no radio transmitters have been installed.
- The only strange problem I found was the fact that some of the areas I was driving through had no power due to a storm. Garmin got scared and told me the freeway must be closed, I knew better since the city on both sides of the freeway were dark with police light flashing directing traffic in the distance. I was sure the radios in that city were not transmitting, so I continued on I-75 without incident. Sometime we need to remember that these are only computers.
- By clicking on the icon when a warning was approaching Garmin would tell you that it was congested, a traffic accident ahead, etc.. This feature is only as good as the city that was transmitting the information. Some times it warned me of an accident that was already cleared. I liked when it showed how long the expected delay would be. But then again sometimes there was congestion, for a person changing their tire, that was not transmitted by the local city.

Internal Memory: ***VERY IMPORTANT***
- The reason I bought this Garmin was because my older Garmin could no longer hold the newer maps. The new maps tend to be bigger and my old unit was limited to 2 gig internal memory. Since the maps became large it could no longer update.
- This Garmin has the biggest internal memory at 8 gig. I had to do a ton of research to find this out as Garmin doesn't tell you on their website or in the specs. Be careful since Garmin still sells units with small internal memory which will mess you up for future updates.
- With 8 gig of internal memory I will have no problem with the newer and larger updates for maps.

Adding Memory:
- You can add a microSD card to store person stuff on this unit.
- You can add books and photos to the GPS but I personally think this is a waste of time. Why would I want my photo album on this thing or a book on a small 5" screen when you can but a descent reader with a big screen that would be much better for that purpose.

Typical Features:
- You can manually search for restaurants, fuel, hospital, police, etc. just like the older units.
- You can even manually type in the address if you want to but why would you do that when you can just talk to this unit.

Battery:
- Using the unit on battery will only give you a couple of hours of life. Plus, if you are driving this disables the Live Traffic feature that requires the power cord for use.

Manual:
- The manual that comes with the unit is basically how to get started. More of a simplified instruction guide with a few pages.
- The real manual that explains everything must be downloaded from Garmin. I didn't have any computer connection available when I was setting mine up but by looking at the simplified manual it was very intuitive and pretty easily to figure out. I would however recommend at least reviewing the simplified instruction manual that comes with it so you can learn about some of the cool features and how to use them.

Price:
- Amazon had the best price on this unit with free shipping using Amazon Prime. I searched around and found some priced the same but the shipping made them no longer a good deal. I also know I can trust Amazon compared to some of the other companies I've never hear of. I also bought the accessories on Amazon as I'm too cheap to pay Best Buy prices or Garmin's price.
- There is a top-of-the-line model that does more than this Garmin but this does enough for me.

Accessories:
- The unit does NOT come with a case, be sure to order something to put it in. I ordered a hard case to store it and the cord in as well as a leather thinner case for when I travel. This way I can stash the cord and mount under the seat while I take Garmin out of the vehicle to keep him safe without having to carry a big case with the cord in it. I don't know why Garmin stopped providing a protective case, must be for money of course.
- I also bought the non-slip pad that allows me to sit him on the dash. I'm not a fan of the suction cup mounts as this advertises to break the window and look for a GPS inside. Besides the bean bag stand allows me to put him on the seat, in my wife's hand to find a restaurant, or anywhere on the dash I want.

Overall, If you are looking for a nice GPS that will handle future map updates, can use voice commands, has a bigger screen than most, and has a reasonable price I don't think you will be disappointed. I've used this thing hard and am impressed with the results I got. Do your research when you look around as I did. I spent 1 week reading review after review and tracking down internal memory specs before I choose this one.

UPDATE 12/26/2013
When updating the Lifetime Map program you need to be running a newer version of Windows XP (2005 or newer), or Windows 7 or Windows 8. This is because the updating program called "Garmin Express" requires an updated program from Microsoft to install. I had a machine using Windows XP 2003 and had to use my Windows 7 machine for the program Garmin Express to install.

5Why I bought a Garmin Nuvi 2595LMT
By Iggy Tech
Why I bought a Garmin Nuvi 2595LMT.
I have owned many voice command systems in my car from both Magellan and Garmin. I use my gps in my car and in my truck when pulling my 5th wheel. I had a Magellan Maestro 4050 with voice command since 2008 and decided to look around for a new one with a few more bells and whistles. I spent a week solid reading reviews and was ready to buy a Nuvi 3490LMT but kept on reading about software issues and after trying on at BestBuy didn't see it worth $400 for a few additional features.
With that in mind I looked back to Magellan Roadmaster 1700 and a 4700 and even the 5175 Traveller and just couldn't find one that had the features I wanted.
So back to Garmin I looked and found out that The Nuvi 2595LMT had everything I like and needed and was $150 less than the NUVI 3490LMT.

What I liked in the Nuvi 2595LMT
5" screen
Voice Commands
Speaks street names, turn by turn
One button to save and name a location.
Free map and traffic for life
Highway Lane selection
Highway Exit enhancement
Highway speed for that highway
Speed limit exceeded notice
Pedestrian mode
Can change icons and voices
Has maps for most of Mexico
Select multiple routes and not just one
You can add coordinates in for a route which I use a lot.

And the great price from Amazon which I have bought many items from and has a great return policy.
I will turn off Bluetooth because I already have it in my car and truck stereo systems and to save battery when in pedestrian mode on battery.

What I don't like
Nothing yet about the unit.
I hate users who write rviews before they read the manual and learn how to use their unit.
Then complain how the unit doesn't do this or that and the unit does> All they have to do is take the time a read and learn.
I'm sure I will get a lot of negitive remarks to my statement but it really bothers me when the problem is the human factor.

With that said I almust add that yes firmware updates are always needed as minor bugs are found and what I see is Garmin in on top of this or they wouldn't be in business long.

4Very light weight but slower than HP Stream 11 and Acer E 11 - Can also damage wood desks
By Lon J. Seidman
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3231YIWI9JA3J UPDATE: I shot the video before pricing on this notebook began to fluctuate, it's possible to purchase it for less than $199 depending on what the market is for it. I've seen it for as low as $139, with some black Friday deals at $99.

Asus is joining the sub-$200 Windows PC market with their new X205TA laptop.

This one differs from similar priced offerings from HP and Acer in that it's powered by a quad core Intel Atom processor at 1.3ghz. The Acer and HP both have a faster Intel Celeron N2840 processor. But because the Atom processor uses less power, the Asus is able to put a smaller battery inside their PC that reduces weight and lasts longer than the competition. The result is a PC that can run for approximately 12 hours doing light tasks and weighs only 2.2 pounds.

The Octane javascript benchmark puts the Asus X205TA considerably slower than the HP Stream 11 and Acer E 11. It's also behind most Chromebooks. But it doesn't feel as slow as its benchmark scores indicate. I think that might be because its quad core processor can handle more browser rendering tasks than the N2840's dual core processor can.

The display is the nicest I've seen on one of these sub $200 Windows computers so far. It's crisp and clear and much nicer to look at.

There is a significant design issue with two metal protrusions on the back of the display. When the screen is opened and on a desk the metal can dig into wood, leaving scratches and dents on the desk surface.

Like its competitors it doesn't have much available storage. After the windows installation and recovery partition there's only about 15-17 gigabytes of free space available. This can be supplemented by installing a microSD card to add additional storage. The card sits flush to the case when installed.

I think the HP Stream 11 still remains the best value among the sub $200 Windows PCs, primarily because it's faster and comes with a full year of an Office 365 subscription.

But if portability and weight are a factor the X205TA wins out.

5Almost perfect for the price, but close enough!
By Sean
I ordered this laptop the day after it was released. As time would have it, I was looking for something light weight to use for school that could run office and didn't cost $300-$400. This fit the bill nicely. Time to jump right into the review, please note that some people have different opinions and I am solely basing mine on the fact that I got this for $179.99, so docking stars will be tough.

The Screen: Great quality, plenty bright enough at the highest setting to view in the sunlight, or dark enough that it won't blind you in a dark room.

The Keyboard: Awesome. I was worried about getting a smaller laptop that would have a cramped keyboard. I have large hands and typing on certain laptops I make tons of errors and end up bumping the touchpad. I have no issues with this.
My only complaint on the keyboard is there is only one tiny light for the caps lock, and it is located next to the battery and charge lights (on the front). You really don't see this when you are typing. A tiny light in the empty space at the top of the keyboard would have been an ideal place for this (like most keyboards). Windows 8 does not have any sort of screen prompts to let you know if caps is on or off that I am aware of.

The Touchpad: Some say its finicky, I haven't had any issues with it. The Asus Smart Gesture works fine, I disabled the pinch to zoom though as I sometimes do that accidentally.
Tiny complaint: Having the clicker integrated into the touch pad makes it difficult to find in the dark sometimes, I sort of wish it were raised up a little, or the divider between the left and right mouse button was something you could feel (like the home keys have).

The Storage: This is where the laptop hurts. From the factory, you have 17.1GB of free space, not bad right? Well once you install all the updates for Windows, you are left with about 12-13gb. The recovery partition has a reserved 8GB file size, even though the file size itself is only 5GB. I did a trick that I will explain at the end of the review to gain that 3GB back. 12.1GB isn't a lot. Considering Microsoft Office is 3GB in itself before you install all the updates, you can be pressed for space.
Workaround: Micro SD. I bought a 64GB micro sd to put my music on. I had originally installed Office and Itunes to it as well, it worked fine but you could tell it was a bit sluggish. I will explain why next.

The Micro SD Reader: This is just my ignorance of not knowing how card readers worked. I had assumed that if it was onboard you could get the max speeds possible out of any card. This is not true. This card reader is limited to USB 2.0 speeds, so don't go spending a ton of money on a really fast micro sd. You will always be capped around 20-25 mb/s.

The processor and ram: The processor is plenty fast for this computer, and asus has tweaked windows 8 to only use 500mb of ram, so 1.5gb is a good amount of ram. I can run Chrome (with apps and extensions) with multiple tabs, itunes and office and hover around 1.5gb of ram in use.

The Battery: This is my only gripe. You do get excellent battery life on this laptop. However, it seems to be a common issue that the laptop is being shipped with around 10% battery wear. I have talked to a few others who own it and as you can see on some screenshots uploaded. Mine has went from 7% to 10% in a week, and I have only had 4-5 charge cycles (I charge at about 10-15% life). Definitely something to keep an eye on as times goes on.

The recovery partition: You can move this to a USB stick if you would like, I did this in hopes that it would delete the recovery partition. From what I can tell, there is no way to delete the recovery partition without using the command prompt. So When I created my recovery USB I booted from it to test to make sure it worked before I attempted to delete the partition. During the install it asks if you want to re-partition the drives, I chose yes. This took a bit but it gave me 20.1gb free and lowered the recovery partition to the 5gb it takes up.

Final notes: Nothing can be upgraded on this laptop, everything is soldered in as other reviewers have said. No fans make this thing noiseless. Don't expect to play 3D games on this, it's not built for that. Terraria runs at about 45 FPS.

The website says it comes with office 365, I can't confirm because I have my own personal office installed on it. There is no windows 8.1 key that I can tell, just a onedrive key in the box.

One final note: don't expect to get 12 hours of battery life unless you are just doing web browsing. Watching Twitch, Youtube, Or Netflix will run the processor at 90-100% constantly, which will obviously drain the battery a lot quicker. A lot of reviewers mention the two circular stabilizers on the back of the display damaging the desk. I can't say that I have this issue, i've opened it many times on my wooden desk and there are no marks to be found.

Also, not sure if it is a software or hardware issue, but the fn+f7 which is supposed to turn the display OFF, also stops any music that may be playing and essentially puts your computer to sleep. You can use a blank screensaver, or change closing the lid to do nothing to resolve this issue.

TLDR; Awesome laptop, has some small inconveniences. You can get it for $180-$200 and I think it is well worth the money if you just want a lightweight laptop to carry around and do work or browse the internet on.

EDIT: I just picked up the non signature version from BB for $140. Here are the differences:

Some bloat that can easily be uninstalled, free space on a fresh install is still 17.1GB
Recovery partition is still 8 GB, but actually 5.5GB (asus software probably)
A popup that asks you to register.
That's honestly all I can tell the difference. The microsoft signature edition came with some wallpapers.

A word of warning: Check for dead pixels - I went 2/2 on laptops with a dead pixel on the screen.

5Shockingly Light

Brilliant little notebook. The storage is limited (advertised as 32GB, but more like 20GB usable after Windows), but it has a microSD slot that can easily be used to double or triple your storage. ASUS also has a little popup reminding you that they offer 2 years of 500GB cloud storage for free. It's a nice adder, but I can already foresee problems if I need a file while on a plane or someplace else without free WiFi. MicroSD will be my first option; I might even try to glue a microSD card in place permanently.

Windows update did take forever, but that's been my experience with most new computers. It took three rounds to get all of the updates installed (apparently some newer updates require older updates first, I guess?) Windows 8 is still Windows 8, and there's no helping that unless you want to drop the Windows 10 technical preview on here.

The screen is okay. It's fine if viewed straight on, but it can get pretty washed out if viewed even slightly off-angle; for this price, it doesn't really matter that much.

One other note: this notebook is extremely light... like, shockingly light. I have an ultra-high-end aluminum i7 notebook in this same screen size that feels heavier. The paint has a sort of grippy matte finish that feels much more premium than bare plastic or some of those glossy fingerprint-magnet finishes that you find on some machines. This would be a great option for kids or as a second personal notebook to take on business trips.

4Awesome hardware, but be sure to set it up properly!
By Nicolas Siemsen
The Asus RT-N66U is absolutely an impressive piece of hardware. Seriously powerful, feature packed, aesthetically pleasing, and at an approachable price point for the hobbyist. I think you'll find that this holds true by reading all the great reviews here.

There are definitely two weak points to be aware of, however.

The first - the firmware that it ships with is in pretty rough shape.

After unboxing and plugging in my router I went through the setup wizard to change the SSID, change the router password, and set up WPA2 key. This went fine. After that, I went in to the router settings and made one small change, saved it, and was disconnected from the router as part of the change. It should have reconnected shortly after, but instead my browser presented me the page that comes up when a web address cannot be reached. I tried for a while but the router was suddenly inaccessible on the default IP address. Basically, from what I could tell, the change I made however benign had buggered up the router. I ended up resorting to a reset - accomplished by holding the reset button for 5-10 seconds with the router turned on.

So lesson #1 here is to immediately install the newest firmware available at the Asus website THE MOMENT you unbox your and plug in your router. The firmware update went smoothly after I got the router reset to factory setup and working again, and now it's been working flawlessly for a month.

OK, second weak point - the router, as far as I'm concerned, comes from the factory improperly configured. That is, the default settings in the router hamper its full and proper operation.

What I mean by this is that after installing the router I was getting less than ideal performance out of it. While it was working well enough to give me good download and upload speeds (25mb/sec down, 15mb/sec up) from my cable connection, internal network speeds and coverage were below expectations. For example, paired with a matching dual band NetGear USB wireless adapter on my office computer, Windows wireless client was showing network speed fluctuating between 78Mbps and 216Mbps with it usually in the middle somewhere around 120Mbps. Better than the approx 50Mbps speeds I would see with my 802.11g router and adapter previously but not what I'd expected. In addition, the signal strength was rather poor in the back room. As another example, I was getting a consistent 144Mbps from my XPS M1530 laptop, with an older single band 2.4Ghz draft-N internal card, in the living room right near the router. Also less than my hopes had been for this router.

So I did some more thorough review of the wireless settings and found two big issues that needed to be change to get this router working as it should be.

The first was that the wireless control channel setting for both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands is set to "Auto" be default. Ideally, this would mean that the router would dynamically select the best channel based on local interference in that band. In the real world, though, this Auto mode on most routers doesn't work that well and this is no different. I performed a wireless network scan with my Android phone using a free app, and found that my router was camped out on Channel 6. As some may know, this is the default channel for most consumer routers and most home users never change away from it. Sure enough, there were three other wireless networks that I could detect around neighborhood that were on channel 6 as well. To remedy this, I took the 2.4Ghz band off of Auto and set the channel to 1. For those making this change themselves, be sure to scan using something like WiEye on your phone or inSSIDer on your computer. Assuming that most of the other routers in your area will be using channel 6, you will need to move yours to the far ends of the channel list, choosing either 1 or 11. This because the signal from the routers set to channel 6 do not stay there perfectly, instead they overlap substantially. A router on channel 8, for example, will have a pretty good overlap with those on channel 6 and will still see interference. The only way to avoid this is moving all the way to 1 or 11. I left the 5Ghz channel selection on Auto for now, as the 5Ghz band is much less interference prone currently, and in fact I don't believe there are any other 5Ghz networks in range in my neighborhood currently so it's a non-issue there.

The second major problem I found with the router's default setting was also in the router settings. The RT-N66U has the option to change the bandwidth for a given band. By default, I found that both the 2.4 and 5Ghz bands were set to a signal bandwidth of 20Hz. The reason this is a major issue is that at 20Hz, there is simply not enough throughput on the given band to allow for this router to hit its full speed potential. So I went ahead and set the router to use 40Hz bandwidth for each band.

With those two changes, my network performance and signal strength increased dramatically with real world results to prove it. Now, that dual-band network adapter in my office shows pegged at a solid 450Mbps (x2 for the dual bands for a theoretical 900Mbps hence the N900 designation on the router). Now that's what I'd been expecting all along! As for the laptop in the other room, on single band 2.4Ghz it is now hitting a rock solid 300Mbps which is the max for that older draft-N card. This extra speed has even helped me attain the max internet speeds I can expect from my cable plan, I'm now seeing 30+Mbps download speeds and 20+Mbps uploads.

Now that it is properly configured, I have set it up to do all sorts of other fun stuff. I set up the VPN, with encryption, and can now connect to that with my Android phone and tablet when traveling which is a great feature for secure and private browsing when at airports, hotels, etc. I set up a separate "guest" SSID that is segregated from my internal network for my phones and to connect to since they are the only devices that regularly leave the security of the internal network. There are still 5 more guest SSID's I can set up. Additionally, I connected a USB hard drive to it and it's running as a local share folder as well as a DLNA and iTunes server. It's doing all this with a desktop computer, two laptop computers, three Android phones, an Android tablet, a chromecast and a PS3 all connected to it and it's not even breaking a sweat.

So that's a lot of info, but I hope you can see that in the end with some know-how and research on the internet (like reading this review) this router can be just about the best thing you can do for your home or small business network at this price point. I would not hesitate to recommend it with the above provisos in mind.

5After initial release problems, which have been resolved, this is hands-down the best WiFi access point on the market.
By Craig M. Hamm
Well, as mentioned in another review, the firmware in the initial shipment of these (3.0.0.3.72) is broken. Not buggy, not unstable, but broken. You CANNOT connect to the Internet with the factory firmware, at least in the initial release. I purchased one, returned it in exchange for another one, and the second one had the exact same problem. As discussed on this here: [...]

You must manually enter a URL [...] then change to a language other than English, then update the firmware. (The current version from the ASUS website is 3.0.0.3.90 as of 1/13/2012) Of course, that means you need to download the firmware first, since you can't connect to the Internet with the factory firmware. And of course, a router is required for most people to access the Internet, so... well, you can see where I'm going with this.

After the firmware update, things were much better. I had the Internet connection set up in a few minutes, and the speed was unbelievable. Certainly the fastest consumer wireless on the market right now. It has nice features, like 6 different SSIDs for guest networks (3 for each band.) You can choose whether or not to give those networks access to your primary network, and since you can set up multiple SSIDs, you can have different settings for each. It also has parental controls, good QoS, a VPN server and some other nice features. It supports Zoneedit for dynamic DNS, so I was pretty happy about that. (Neither the Cisco or the Linksys models I have tried do.)

One feature that's present in the Linksys E4200, but not on this router, is an SSL web GUI. I work in IT, and it bothers me administering my firewall over plaintext HTTP. Probably not that big a deal to home users, but I don't think it's that difficult to implement an HTTPS server for the admin GUI. It also makes this unit completely unsuited for deployment in a business environment, where security is paramount. I'm hopeful that it'll be in a future firmware update. I could probably use this router for a lot of small-business clients.

As far as wireless range goes, this blows away both the Cisco E4200v1 and the Netgear WNDR3800, both of which I tested in the same placement as this one. I get full signal in all corners of my house, which isn't too big, but both the Netgear and Cisco routers got medium signal in the corners of my house. I have 5 wireless devices and 6 wired devices, and speed thus far has not been a problem. I stream video without drops and file transfers are quick. No complaints.

I really wish ASUS hadn't made the error of shipping this with broken firmware. They will undoubtedly have a return rate nearing 100% until they get the new firmware on shipping units. Had it not been for this, I would easily give this product 5 stars. If it had HTTPS on the GUI, I'd say it's a perfect device.

UPDATE 10/12/2012
So they fixed the firmware issue within a couple weeks of release. Now, they've released a firmware upgrade that adds HTTPS functionality. I'm upgrading my review to five stars!

UPDATE 11/16/2012
I changed the title of the review, because, other than price, there is no longer any reason not to buy this product. It is the best wireless access point on the market, save for the new ASUS RT-AC66U, which is just an updated version of this product. (New radio, supports a new standard that nobody uses yet.) I don't use it as a router, so I can't qualify those features, but as far as range, features and consistent connectivity, you can't beat this product at any price.

4Solid router, AWESOME range, READ FOR ENGLISH FIRMWARE CONFIG HELP!
By Bryan Lynch
I got my shiny new RT-N66U today from Amazon.

I do networking for a living and figured even though I'd seen reports of the shipping factory firmware being broken in English mode, it would be no problem.

WHAT A PAIN!!!!!!!!!!! Come on Asus!!!!

The short and sweet version of how to get your router up and running with 3.0.0.3.72:

*Download 3.0.0.3.90 firmware from [...]
*Extract RT-N66U_3.0.0.3_90.trx to somewhere on your computer
*Log in to 192.168.1.1 (User:admin Pass:admin)
*Complete the initial setup wizard using any info you want. Just GET THROUGH IT. It will display a broken page at the end.
*Enter 192.168.1.1 in your web browser
*Click on "Administration" on the left
*Click on "Firmware Upgrade" on the top tab
*Switch the language box in the top-right-hand corner from "English" to something else. I used French.
*Upload RT-N66U_3.0.0.3_90.trx
***WAIT FOR IT TO FINISH***
*When it's complete, choose "English" again from the language drop-down.
*Go back to 192.168.1.1 and complete your initial router configuration.

The good news is that after I got 3.0.0.3.90 on the router all seems to be running smoothly.

I was replacing an ASUS RT-N56U and I have found so far:

*SIGNIFICANTLY better range on both 2.4 and 5ghz bands (Maybe 3-6db increase at an 80ft distance)

I'm hoping that when I get a wireless adapter that supports 450Mbps that I'll be able to see the huge difference.

I like the way it physically looks (Like some type of network Samurai device) and I love that I can swap out the antennas as I see fit. It looks pretty bad-ass actually.

It's been running smooth for a day now.

The specs on this thing are awesome. I just can't believe that Asus would let it ship out with severely broken English firmware. Oh well that's what I get for buying a product the day it's released lol.

The bottom line is that if you're into this kind of technology, the initial configuration pain shouldn't be a huge deterrent to you. Third-party Broadcom firmware support will be abundant for this router soon. There are already a few releases out there for you to try like TomatoUSB.

The 2.4ghz range increase was noticeable for me. 5ghz was also increased, but still has a smaller range footprint than the 2.4ghz band.

If you are not comfortable with this kind of work, maybe wait a few months for Asus to ship some units out with the firmware upgraded for you.

I would have given this router 5 stars if it wasn't for the shipping firmware bug. Asus, you get 4 stars for making me work.

Update to come in a few weeks of operation.

Update 1/19/12: Just using the built-in wifi radio on my Samsung Galaxy S2, I was able to use my router nearly a block away from my house on 2.4ghz. The router is near a window and this was almost line-of-sight.

I plan on playing with the DLNA features in the next day or two. I'll post how that goes.

So far so good! Love it!

Update 1/23/12: I've been busy the last few days but I wanted to check in and say that this router has been running 100% rock solid and the wifi range increase has been DRAMATIC for me. I love the looks and function of this unit and plan on recommending it to any friend who asks.

5Read the instructions!
By Hmaxim
A lot of the negative reviews seem to be caused by not reading the instructions completely, or understanding how to properly connect.
First, this soundbar remote WILL control a Samsung TV and, if connected via a digital audio cable, WILL power on and off with the TV alone...no need to power on the soundbar separately.Once the TV is shut off the soundbar will remain on for 20 minutes and then power itself off. It actually does say this on the instruction manual!
The digital audio cable is the best choice. Connect from the TV to the soundbar, not from the cable box to the soundbar.
There are several sound options via the remote. I prefer "Drama" over any of the other choices for movies and TV shows. You need to play with it and see what you like.
The subwoofer will give you a nosebleed. If it is turned up passed +2 or +3 it will tend to muddle the other sound frequencies. Be conservative with it to get full fidelity.
If you want to see this soundbar before buying, go to Sears. They have it there set up for demo. The price is better here on Amazon. There are many preset sound options with this product. But that is actually a good thing, as long as you take the time to explore them.

5A STEAL!

Instant upgrade to any home theater system. I have a new Samsung 51 inch TV that has OK speakers, but once I added this system, I was BLOWN AWAY with how much it can do with such an inexpensive package.

5Great buy for the money!
By Amazon Customer
I really liked this system despite some of the reviews I read. Very easy to hook up and get running. It took a few minutes to adjust to my liking and I was watching a BluRay in minutes. Loud, clear sound with a nice clear bass sub-woofer. It's not top quality, but like I said for the money, it was a tremendous upgrade from the speakers on the TV that point to the wall. With the tight budget I'm on lately, I wanted something that I could enjoy BluRay's as well as music DVD's and concerts streaming from the internet and netflix. All worked great.

What I like most, is being able to come home, press one button to turn the speakers on, then pair my phone and continue listening where I left off using Bluetooth! Great function and very convenient. You get a little more than you pay for with this system. I
d highly recommend it for the average person or family that just wants better sound and a louder system while watching tv and movies. I'll probably get something with higher power later, but for now this is going to work great for years. Thanks also to Ocean Reef Electronics that sold it to me. I chose to go with the refurbished because I didn't have very high expectations for $100. Well, Samsung and Ocean Reef out did themselves. Thanks!

4Good for the price, but not hi-fi
By Kevin M. Tekel
There are lot of these small, cheap record players on the market but the Jensen JTA-230 is the only one with a pitch adjustment and tone control. It is quite a bit smaller than it looks in the photo -- an LP sticks out of the sides when playing because the disc is bigger than the player itself! The built-in speakers sound OK considering how tiny they are, but it doesn't get very loud, even when turned all the way up. It's loud enough for personal listening, but not for a party or dance lessons.

A 3 mil stylus for playing 78 RPM records is not included, but can be purchased separately (look for part number 793-D3). But the stylus is rather difficult to remove from the cartridge, so if you play them often, you might as well dedicate it to only playing 78s, and get a better turntable for your LPs and 45s, rather than swapping back and forth beween the regular and 3 mil styli.

The USB output, RCA line level output, and headphone jack all work fine, but sounds tinny and lacking in bass, so playing it through larger speakers really doesn't improve the sound quality that much compared to the small built-in speakers. Even if you try to boost the bass using an equalizer, it still won't sound hi-fi. So the JTA-230 is best used as a tiny, inexpensive, self-contained record player. It's a good beginner turntable for kids or for "crate digging" but won't be good enough to be your primary turntable for serious listening.

5Awesome!
By Samuel Carter
As a music lover and a vinyl collector, this is one of the best record players I have ever owned. Jensen is a reliable brand. The speakers are great for what they are. They are not the loudest, but they get the job done. I recommend getting some bigger speakers if you want to make the neighbors mad. If you listen to rock and guitar wailing records then the pitch adjust is a life saver. All in all I am extremely satisfied with this product. It is a great deal when it comes to the price and the quality.

4Sounds Great Through an Amp - Some Sound Advice Below
By The Dude
My daughter received this turntable from Santa this Christmas along with several albums. It sounded ok through the built-in speakers, but not great. They definitely weren't doing The Beatles justice. I went down to the basement and dusted off an old Sony receiver/amplifier I had from the late 1990's. I then went up to the attic and brought down some old Bose bookshelf speakers from around the same period. Both amp and speakers were in great shape. They just needed a little cleaning. After hooking everything up, I powered on the turntable and amp and threw on Let It Be. The resulting sound can best be described as a dozen or so ferrel cats being simultaneously dragged down a chalkboard. It was horrendous. I checked and rechecked connections and settings. No good. I figured the amp may have been damaged by moisture from having been in the basement for so long, so I dusted off another old amp I had just to see. This one was a very high end Philips amp from the 1980's. Same results.

The RCA connectors I used were high end, so I pretty much ruled those out. The speaker cable was brand new 18 gauge and the runs were only a couple of feet in either direction. I didn't think that was the issue. The sound quality was equally bad from both speakers. I even tried shifting the connections from "speaker system A" to "speaker system B" with no luck. The sound was unlistenable.

On a hunch, I reconnected the RCA connectors from "phono" to "aux". This solved the problem. I then reconnected the turntable to the Sony amp, this time running the connection through the "tape/dat" RCA input as there was no "aux" on the Sony amp. Following some minor adjustments to the amp settings, the resulting sound was actually remarkable. It produces that nice warm mellow sound you simply cannot get from today's digital recordings.

The best I can figure is that older amps must have some sort of special RCA connections that are designed for older phonographs. They probably have some sort of compensating filtering or adjustment that takes into account the fact that older turntables don't have pre-amps. Your guess is as good as mine. Either way, if you decide to hook this turntable up to an older amp with a "phono" RCA connection, you may experience similar results to mine. If so, simply move it to one of the other available RCA connectors.

If you have an old amp and speakers lying around, I would highly recommend that you hook them up to this turntable. I suspect that you will be very pleased with the results.

4Excellent value for $, especially if you have a recent Samsung TV with SoundShare
By Asya Kamsky
Bought this for Samsung 2013 TV that had pretty crappy sound. Hooked it up via SoundShare which was tricky as "Add New Device" is buried three levels deep (it's under Menu->System->DeviceManager->SoundShareSettings->AddNewDevice.

Once I found it, the set-up was trivially simple. The TV remote now automatically controls the volume on the device (device basically now becomes the speaker for the TV).

The sound is MUCH better than the speakers that are inside the TV, but not all modes work equally well -> sound bar has separate treble and bass controls as well as different "modes" some of which seem useless (sports) and others improve the quality of sound a lot (movie/music/voice). Use the sound bar remote to adjust those.

The speaker is very slim and looks nice - with wireless connection to the TV it doesn't need any special mounting brackets. It only came with audio cable which I'm sure is inferior to connecting it via HDMI or digital optical cable.

Everyone who's complaining about sound quality might want to look into settings and adjust them, or check what cable you used to connect the speaker and use a higher/digital connection. With wireless/SoundShare the sound is great but every once in a while it "hiccups" - I'm guessing that wireless interference and will probably connect it via optical cable for long term use.

4For the price this is a great buy however
By kmcmillan
For the price this is a great buy however, if you are expecting true surround with booming bass you will be sadly mistaken. I wanted to boost the sound and give it more depth to compensate for the thin tinny quality of my Samsung TV. It does the job and is pretty impressive. HOWEVER...setting this sucker up was a nightmare. If you hook it up via optical you cannot control the volume with anything other than the tiny remote that it comes with. You cant program it to your universal...trust me...3 hours of screaming and pushing buttons got me nowhere...so what to do? A tiny remote in my house is just begging to end up missing...so i go buy another HDMI cable because someone somewhere said theirs was programmable once hooked up via HDmI...and everything you read on the internet is true, right? So..i followed the directions. I dont have the Arc option on my tv so i plugged my cable box to the HDMI in port and used another cabe to go HDMI out to the Tv. Turn it on and set it to the function for HDMI and voila! Let there be sound. I try to program my remote....nada. its at this point that i notice the tv telling me that the aynet device isnt recognized. I went into the tv settings and told it to search...whatta ya kniw...it added it...i then turned aynet on on the soundbar by holding the aynet button on said tiny remote for 3 seconds...im still not quite sure if this step was necessary. Hit the uni remote and lo and behold....the volume worked!!!!! I turn on my dvd player..which is hooked up via rca...no sound...wii...no sound...im changing functions on the soundbar like a mad man to no avail...what the heck...they worked before when i had the optical hooked up.....and lightbulb...i hook the optical cable back in alongside the hdmi...and everything works. If this helps one single person i will feel as if i have done my part to contribute to humanity

4For a smaller room, it is good!
By A. Hudson (east coast) Bisou bisou
If you are expecting to be blown away by this you will be disappointed. If you keep in mind that it is a 2.1 channel with 290 watts total (sound bar 160 watts subwoofer 130 watts), you will be happy.

I decided to place this in my bedroom with a Toshiba TV. I must admit, this is packed very well! Samsung did a great job there. On the product page on Amazon, it states: Batteries: 2 AA batteries required (included), that is not the case, it comes with a CR2032 battery for the remote which is nice.

Unpacking and setting this up took about ten minutes for me. I did not use any cables that were provided, I used my own optical cable which is the one: AmazonBasics Digital Optical Audio Toslink Cable - 6 Feet (1.8 Meters). Pairing the wireless sub woofer was easy! Make sure you raise the sub to get the best sound you can. Some people put it on the floor, it needs to be raised. As far as the sound bar, it comes with mounting brackets but I placed it directly in front of my TV since it is raised. This is the sleekest sound bar I have ever seen, I was very impressed Samsung was able to make it so slender. The sub is obviously a bigger size and decent weight.

Once hooked up I went through the presets and have to say I am enjoying the ‘cinema’ the most. ‘Sports’ sounds good too, with it focusing on the center sound, but sounds full and rich. They both have just enough bass where the other presets were too tinny for me.

Pairing a Bluetooth device is simple. You just use the remote, pair your device, and viola, you are connected. The first device I paired was my iPod Touch (5th generation) and was amused by the fact that the display read out it was my, it read my full name and then iPod Touch, that is impressive! With my Touch I have streamed Pandora and also my Amazon music library. I also watch TV shows (from my Touch) and might stream the sound if I am in the next room which is my vanity room getting ready.

The only complaint I have, I can’t stand any static at all while listening to audio of any kind, probably why I can’t stand any radio stations. I have had some static come through and it is bothersome. I notice it more though since it is something that has always bothered me where others are not as sensitive. I know it is because the Sub is hooked up wirelessly but there is inference coming from somewhere. It is not much, but enough for me to mention.

Again, if you are going to get this knowing it is more of a bedroom or small room sound system, you will be fine. However, if you are looking for a full surround system for your 60 inch TV when you watch movies, I would find something else more powerful and with at least 5.1 or 7.1 (even though 5.1 what is usually broadcasted). However, for what it offers, I am impressed.
